The government of the Argentine province of Corrientes invests in five-star tourism, while its people call the local radio station begging for a wheelchair or a school notebook. A refined and cruel snapshot of a colonial legacy that still governs us.
Where there used to be silence, jaguars, and mud, there are now boutique hotels with spas, eco-friendly air conditioning, and exclusive experiences for tourists with dollars and time. Welcome to Iberá, the eco-tourism jewel of Argentina’s northeast.
But just a few kilometers away, local radio stations receive pleas from neighbors asking for crutches, a used wheelchair, or a backpack. Sometimes they just ask for electricity, because power outages can last for hours.
The contrast isn’t just visual. It’s historical. It’s the 2025 version of the criollo encomienda: benefits flow upward, shortages remain below, wrapped in the packaging of “sustainable development.”
Poverty in Corrientes exceeds 36%. Yet a Marriott hotel is being built. Who profits? Who’s left outside the frame?
If dignity doesn’t come with investment, all that’s left is scenery. Tourism for export—inequality for the locals.
