🇬🇧 La Coppia in Dissonanza

United Kingdom
The political winds at Downing Street blow ever stronger, and Keir Starmer seems trapped in a whirlwind that threatens to tear his leadership apart. The much-trumpeted government “reset,” devised with Rachel Reeves in an effort to breathe life into a faltering premiership, has been eclipsed by a drama of taxation, hypocrisy, and internal power struggles.

Angela Rayner, the “Red Queen” who once relished attacking Conservatives accused of tax evasion, became ensnared in her own stamp duty maze. Her excuse —faulty legal advice— failed to convince either Sir Laurie Magnus or the public. What began as a miscalculation ended with her resignation as deputy prime minister and deputy Labour leader.

For Starmer, the blow was more than symbolic. Rayner was far more than a number two: she was his anchor to the trade unions and the Labour Party’s restive factions. Her fall now opens a succession battle that threatens to expose every fracture in the party. Shabana Mahmood, the newly promoted home secretary, is floated as a unifying figure; but in today’s climate, even the strongest candidate risks being scorched in the crossfire.

Most troubling is the perception of a void at Labour’s core. “Keir has no authority in the PLP,” admitted one veteran MP. And it rings true: his political project, already weakened by erratic U-turns and sinking poll numbers, risks never taking off. The “reset” has morphed into a blackout.

In this tableau, Starmer looks like a feather in the wind: unable to chart direction, at the mercy of internal currents, leading a party hungry for authority yet resigned to drift. Time is ticking, murmurs are growing, and a cloud hangs over Westminster: can he still steady his flight, or will he be remembered as a fleeting prime minister, undone by his own frailties?
