U.S. President Donald Trump shocked the world with a 180-degree turn on the war in Ukraine.
Barely a month ago he welcomed Vladimir Putin to Alaska with honors; now, from his favorite platform —Truth Social— he urges Volodymyr Zelensky to “take back all of Ukraine… and maybe even go further”.
His message came after his UN General Assembly speech. Trump dismissed Russia as a “paper tiger”, crippled by a collapsing economy and an army “fighting without direction”. He praised the Ukrainian army and mocked Putin’s failed invasion that was supposed to last three days but has dragged on for over three and a half years.
Zelensky: between surprise and hope
The Ukrainian president admitted being surprised but called Trump’s words “a great change”. Speaking to Fox News, he said Washington is now “closer to guaranteeing Ukraine’s security” and ending the war.
Trump, who months ago told Zelensky “you don’t have the cards to win”, now encourages him with a martial tone. He even suggested NATO should shoot down Russian planes violating allied airspace.
Europe and NATO: rising tensions
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper was blunt at the UN: “Ukraine’s security is our security”. NATO also reaffirmed its ironclad commitment to Article 5.
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski warned Moscow: “If another missile or plane enters our airspace and is shot down, don’t complain. You’ve been warned”.
Trump and the energy front
Trump also blasted Europe’s reliance on Russian oil, calling it “shameful” and hinting he will pressure Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán to halt purchases.
