Tube strikes: RMT threatens to extend protest to the Elizabeth Line
The RMT union, already set to bring the London Tube to a standstill this week, is threatening to extend its action to the Elizabeth Line, the newest part of Transport for London (TfL), operated by a Japanese consortium.
The dispute is wide-ranging: the union demands a cut in weekly working hours from 35 to 32, a pay rise beyond the 3.4% offered, an extension of staff travel discounts, and better conditions for cleaners, currently subcontracted to ABM, with no sick pay and only poverty-level pensions.
The RMT claims to have seen internal documents suggesting the closure of all ticket offices by 2027. TfL denies this, but union leader Eddie Dempsey said the idea was “like pouring petrol on the fire.”
At the same time, the RMT has declared a “formal dispute” with ABM. According to the union, the company has only offered to apply the London Living Wage to cleaners, with no sick pay. “Our colleagues remove graffiti and keep the network clean, while ABM hands out millions in dividends,” Dempsey said.
ABM said it was “disappointed” with the union’s stance and defended its staff’s work as “exemplary.”
For now, no new talks are scheduled. In the depths of the Tube, tensions are rising… and the strike threatens to drag on.
In London, even the dust doesn’t travel for free.
