Libertine Night

Buenos Aires once again proves that Argentine politics never sleeps. This time the protagonist is not a decree or a fiery speech, but a meme cryptocurrency named $LIBRA, now casting an uncomfortable shadow over power.

At the center of the story sits the phone of lobbyist Mauricio Novelli, a key bridge between the crypto world and the government. Judicial experts reportedly recovered a deleted memo referring to a US$5 million alleged agreement tied to presidential support for the project.

The note outlines three payments: an advance, another linked to a presidential tweet, and a final portion connected to a blockchain and artificial intelligence advisory contract.

The document is believed to have been written between October and November 2024, before the visit to Buenos Aires of American entrepreneur Mark Hayden Davis.

Investigators also detected more than twenty communications between Novelli and Karina Milei, at least fourteen calls with presidential adviser Santiago Caputo, and contacts with economist Demian Reidel.

The key moment allegedly occurred on February 14, 2025. While Novelli was calling from Dallas, the website VivaLaLibertadProject went live to channel investments.

At 7:01 p.m., President Javier Milei posted on X supporting $LIBRA and included the contract code required to invest — a 44-character alphanumeric string that had not been publicly available before.

Within hours the token attracted attention and capital. Soon after, its value collapsed, leaving significant losses.

Now the courts are trying to determine whether this was just another wild-west crypto episode — or something closer to a political-financial experiment.

In Buenos Aires, meanwhile, the night show goes on.
