Is Argentina Burning?

The fire is advancing in the south and, as often happens, politics advances with it. This time not because of a bill or a decree, but because of a helicopter that Vice President Victoria Villarruel allegedly requested — or did not — to survey the province of Chubut.

According to official sources, the request would have reached the Federal Emergency Agency, under the Ministry of Security. The response was negative, and the episode quickly moved beyond logistics to become another chapter in the libertarian power struggle.

Villarruel’s inner circle denied the request. The Executive, meanwhile, allowed the version to circulate. Between denials and off-the-record briefings, the helicopter ended up flying without taking off, loaded with political symbolism.

This is not the first time the Vice President has been sidelined from the decision-making core. The head of the Senate appears to operate under a supervised autonomy: she may travel, she may speak, but she cannot always take off.

The paradox is clear. While the real fire consumes thousands of hectares, the symbolic fire burns through political coordination. Within the government, the debate seems to have shifted from managing the emergency to determining who asked for what and who denied it.

At the same time, President Javier Milei chose an epic tone on social media. He thanked firefighters, brigades, and volunteers, highlighting the heroism of those battling the flames in Patagonia. A restrained message, a calculated distance.

Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva found herself — unintentionally — at the center of the episode. Her ministry manages resources and, these days, uncomfortable silences as well.

Thus, between imaginary helicopters and very real fires, politics once again reveals its most combustible side. In Argentina, sometimes what burns the most is not the forest, but power itself.
