🇬🇧 From Russia with Love

Revenge was never a wise counsellor, yet Donald Trump seems to have turned it into state policy. His “purge” of intelligence officials who in 2017 flagged Russian interference in his favour is leaving him blind—just as Putin gears up for fresh moves.

CIA on life support

Ex-Langley officers describe a climate of paranoia: security clearances revoked, blacklists circulating on social media, and Tulsi Gabbard — now the “intelligence tsarina” — publishing the names of 37 professionals branded as “traitors.” Among them, at least one active agent. A blunder that, veterans warn, could blow up the entire architecture of undercover operations in Moscow.

Those who remain prefer safe desks over risky missions. “Why risk my life if the White House will just toss my reports in the bin?” summed up one ex-agent.

Putin, all smiles

While Washington squabbles with itself, Moscow readies Zapad 2025 in Belarus: 40,000 troops, tanks and missiles parading at NATO’s doorstep. The last time, in 2021, it was the prelude to a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

This time, the CIA may be too busy with its own blacklists to notice the drones buzzing.

Gabbard, Loomer and the blacklist

Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s director of intelligence, posted 37 names on X. Part of the list reportedly came from far-right influencer Laura Loomer, who claims 9/11 was “an inside job.” With sources like these, no wonder career professionals are bolting for early retirement.

The danger of blindness

Larry Pfeiffer, a veteran of Obama’s Situation Room, warned: “We are losing the ability to produce the very best.” Without eyes and ears in Moscow, the US risks a strategic déjà vu: underestimating Putin until it’s too late.

Steven Cash, another ex-officer, was sharper still: “We are blinding ourselves. No one knows who’s cooperating with whom, or who holds a post by merit or by presidential whim.”

A witty finale

Espionage has always been a game of shadows, but the Trump administration turned it into a spectacle of red lights, public lists and personal vendettas. If James Bond were around, he’d probably order another martini and take a mission in South America — where at least the reports get read before they blow up.
