🇬🇧 Coincidences

Argentine

Sometimes fate enjoys writing a script worthy of a Buenos Aires sainete: in the very same week, the arrival of the first plane carrying Argentine deportees from the United States was announced… along with the launch of the world’s longest flight, Buenos Aires–Shanghai via New Zealand.

Fact No. 1

An Omni Air International charter will land at Ezeiza carrying deportees under White House orders. Donald Trump, in his second presidential round, decided that Argentina, too, should receive the “return package.” Authorities gave no figures: no one knows if it’s 20, 200, or “the cousin of the cousin who never got a visa.”

Fact No. 2

At the very same airport, with red carpet and tickets costing nearly US$2,000 per leg, the new China Eastern flight will arrive starting December, promising nearly 30 hours of travel, twice a week, to link Shanghai and Buenos Aires. Business class passengers will boast of having endured the longest jet lag in the world… with a stopover in Auckland to stretch both legs and wallets.

Official narrative.
One government celebrates that the world connects us more than ever, while another plane reminds us it also disconnects us—with a kick.

Same destination, different ticket.
Some land for free, courtesy of deportation; others pay a fortune to arrive at the same arrivals hall.

Flight time.
Deportees will have returned from the U.S. faster than millionaires will reach from China.

Welcome.
Some are met by a police car, others by a VIP transfer. But at Ezeiza, everyone ends up in the same duty-free line.
