🇬🇧 Common Flag: From Gaza to Tehran

London – Saturday of crossing banners

In the heart of London, where the Thames winds between centuries-old traditions and global shopfronts, a new scene has become routine: thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators waving flags, beating drums, chanting, and making a message increasingly clear:
“Free Palestine. Hands off Iran.”

This time, however, something else stood out. Not the numbers—though large—nor the passion—which was palpable. It was the growing presence of Iranian flags and portraits of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, raised as a symbol of “resistance” by some marching groups.

One neatly printed banner read:
“Choose the right side of history,” next to the stern and serene face of Iran’s Supreme Leader.

As placards fluttered between Victorian buildings and vegan cafés in Soho, clashing worlds converged in London’s most engaged corners: the Palestinian cause, Iranian theocracy, human rights, Islamic feminism, and an open-air diplomatic confusion.

From Gaza to Tehran with a stop in London

Since October 7, pro-Palestinian marches have become almost a weekend ritual in the UK. But in recent weeks, the coordinated presence of Iranian symbols has marked a political and visual shift.
To some UK analysts, it reflects a “broader regional solidarity.” To others, it’s a “selective whitewashing of theocracies.”

Perhaps the most honest banner was the one that simply read:
“They don’t let us choose well. So we choose loud.”

The streets have spoken. But as always, it’s not the sign that speaks—it’s the hand that carries it.
