Trump, Tariffs, and Old Obsessions

According to the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. administration isn’t exactly scoring points in its trade crusade against China. In particular, Brussels is reluctant to join the American trend of new tariffs, a foreign policy move that Trump handles with all the grace of a rhino in a tea shop. Europe doesn’t seem eager to follow his tariff dance, and that has the businessman-president fuming more than usual.

So frustrated, in fact, that he’s resorted once again to his favorite card: the tariff threat, now seasoned with some geopolitical testosterone. All this ahead of two major international appearances, where he promises not to disappoint his usual audience:

From June 15 to 17 in Canada, at the G7 summit, where he’ll face the European powers… and Ottawa, which seems more interested in becoming the 51st U.S. state than leading the Commonwealth.

On June 24 and 25 at the NATO summit, the transatlantic defense club that Trump sees as an international gym where everyone must pay their dues and do push-ups for America. He used to demand 2% of GDP for defense. Now he wants 5% — like going from sit-ups to tank lifting.

The truth is, Trump doesn’t change — but the world does. And this time, even his favorite weapon —the surprise tariff— doesn’t seem to be working. Brussels hesitates, Berlin yawns, and Macron… well, Macron poses as always.

And so goes diplomacy in 2025: full of threats, short on deals, and flooded with hashtags.
