An Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) unit fired warning shots in the air during the visit of an international diplomatic delegation made up of 25 representatives, including diplomats from Europe, China, Japan, India, and the Italian Deputy Consul in Jerusalem, Alessandro Tutino. The incident, which occurred during a fact-finding mission in a historically tense area, caused panic among the delegates.
No injuries were reported. But this is not a minor event.
Firing near an official diplomatic delegation is not just an overreaction — it is a direct breach of diplomatic inviolability, a fundamental principle of international law. The Israeli military, like any professional armed force, can clearly identify an official mission. If it still fires — even into the air — in their presence, it does so fully aware of the political consequences.
Italy and France have summoned the Israeli ambassadors in Rome and Paris for explanations. This is the appropriate step, but it falls short if not followed by concrete action. Because when weapons are fired near diplomats, it’s not just bullets that are launched — a message is being sent.
And that message — whether intended or not — is deeply concerning: in some territories, even international observation appears unwelcome.
At a time of heightened regional tensions, such acts must not be downplayed. Regardless of flag, religion, or cause, diplomatic immunity cannot be subject to the sound of gunfire.
