The Njue Mystery: Healthy but Excluded from the Conclave

“I’m not sick, I’m perfectly fine. But they didn’t want me at the conclave.”
With this statement, Kenyan Cardinal John Njue lit a candle —and a few fuses— under the quiet dome of the College of Cardinals.

When a Prince of the Church claims to be fit and ready, but is sidelined without explanation, there’s more than white smoke rising —there’s a whiff of mystery.

The conclave is the temple of discretion. But this time, something leaked —and not from the roof of the Sistine Chapel. News of Njue’s exclusion has spread like incense among African bishops, Roman theologians, and curial reporters fluent in Vaticanese.

The question is simple: who really decides who is “able and present” to elect a Pope?

Officially, it’s about age (under 80), health, and canonical residence. But in Njue’s case, the first two boxes were checked. So what gives? Perhaps the third has become… flexible. Or maybe this is part of Francis’ unwritten legacy: redrawing the lines of power without announcing it.

Because if Francis left anything behind, it’s this:
the battle of the cardinals is now fought with guest lists, omissions, and well-organized silences.
“Mercy” has long been filed under hopeful footnotes.

So Cardinal Njue remains outside, rosary in hand and eyebrow raised. Whether this is an isolated case or the first of many, one thing is certain: the next pope will inherit a college that is divided, nervous, and carefully curated.

And might begin his reign with a blessing… and a health check.
