Iran \u2014 the Middle Eastern power ruled by a unique mix of religion and politics \u2014 has announced a dramatic change at the top of its system. The Assembly of Experts has named Mojtaba Khamenei as the country\u2019s new Supreme Leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The detail that immediately caught attention is simple enough: Mojtaba is the son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who led Iran for decades before being killed during Israel\u2019s ongoing bombing campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a republic born out of a revolution that promised to sweep away monarchies, the symbolism is hard to ignore. The Islamic Republic has now solved its succession question in a way that feels suspiciously familiar to old dynasties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Official Iranian media described the vote as \u201cdecisive.\u201d The Assembly proclaimed Mojtaba Khamenei the \u201cthird leader of the sacred system of the Islamic Republic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind the ceremonial language lies the real structure of power: the support of hard-line clerics and, above all, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the country\u2019s most powerful military institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington, unsurprisingly, was not impressed. Former U.S. president Donald Trump had already declared that Mojtaba Khamenei would be an \u201cunacceptable\u201d successor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Tehran, however, such criticism can easily be turned into a badge of honor. One cleric involved in the selection even recalled advice attributed to Ali Khamenei: the leader of Iran should be \u201chated by the enemy rather than praised by him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile the war continues to escalate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israeli airstrikes have recently expanded to include Iran\u2019s energy infrastructure and strategic facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One strike hit a major fuel depot in Tehran, causing massive fires and releasing a chemical cloud over the capital \u2014 raising fears of possible acid rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the middle of bombings, threats and geopolitical theatrics, Iran has installed its new Supreme Leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The revolution that once promised to end dynasties has now produced one of its own \u2014 quite literally, in the name of the father.
